chART Public Art was approached by a Marpole stakeholder with the challenge of utilizing 3,000 rubber ducks that had been part of a government fundraiser on Vancouver Island. In order to keep these toys from being deposited in the landfill, Duck Abacus was developed as a way to not only “re-home” the ducks, but also to engage families, particularly children, in a conversation about recycling, re-use, and reduction of waste. All of the ducks were successfully re-used or re-homed.
