Marpole’s first permanent street mural involved a year-long process of community consultation and design embedded in university curriculum. Emily Carr illustration students created temporary chalk murals at Marpole Summerfest 2012, and 250 surveyed residents provided feedback on various design essentials. The research was then delivered to a second illustration class, who utilized the data to develop four mural concepts that were presented to a jury of Marpole residents and Emily Carr faculty. The final design was executed with a Viva Vancouver grant and in cooperation with the Integrated Graffiti Management Program.
